[H]ipóte[es] tradutórias: um estudo baseado em corpora da Terminologia e da Fraseologia em sites de periódicos científicos literários

Abstract

This work establishes a connection between specialized translation, culture (Azenha, 1999), and genre and discourse community (Swales, 1990), with the fundamental objective of identifying and analyzing terminological units (TUs) and phraseological units (PUs) specific to the production and translation of texts from scholarly journal websites in the field of Literary Studies, through the perspectives of conventionality (Tagnin, 2005), Terminology and Phraseology, (Bevilacqua; Kilian, 2017; Bevilacqua, 2005; Krieger; Finatto, 2023) and Corpus Linguistics (Sardinha, 2000; Tagnin, 2005; Tagnin, 2002, apud Rinco, 2022). Based on three different corpora — a Portuguese Corpus (PC); a Translated Corpus (TC); and an English Corpus (IC) —, compiled from the texts of the Sobre a Revista and Submissões tabs of 10 Brazilian journals, and the About the Journal and Submissions tabs of 10 US journals, we extracted the 100 most frequent terminological units in Portuguese, together with their English versions in the TC and IC. Based on the hypothesis that the versions of the monolingual corpora would be more circumscribed to their languages than the translated version, while the translation would be confined to the same translated gravitational center (Baker, 2004), more linked to the constructions in Portuguese, these units will be analyzed using a mixed method (Schiffrin, 1987), whose combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies will be used to reflect on the patterns of use and conventionality (Tagnin, 2005) of these units, and their respective translations as well as their role as the core of phraseological units (Bevilacqua, 2005) in Portuguese and English. For the qualitative analysis of these translated units, we will address different views of the concept of equivalence, according to Barbosa (2004), Cunha Lacerda (2010) and Arntz, Picht, and Mayer (2002, apud Bevilacqua; Kilian, 2017). We seek to answer if the units in Portuguese correspond partially or totally to their English versions, and what the differences between them are, and whether the TUs are in fact the core of a PU. Finally we also include a glossary of terms, compiled from the analyses undertaken.
