O mundo de Oz: as relações sistêmicas na tradução para português brasileiro

Abstract

This work aims to analyse the translation of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” (Baum, 1900), made by Delfin and published by the Instituto Mojo de Comunicação Intercultural (2019), entitled O Magnífico Mágico de Oz. The central hypothesis of this work is that the translation analysed has specific characteristics, and that the publisher has different editorial purposes, which reveals a type of patronage that is reflected in the translator's choices. As a theoretical contribution, we used the concept of Patronage (Lefevere, 1992) to understand the relations of patronage established for the translation and distribution of this work in the version analysed. We also used Even-Zohar's Theory of Polysystems (2000), because the socio-historical-cultural factors in which the original text and the translated text are anchored can interfere in the translation, distribution and reception of the work. We present a brief overview of children’s and juvenile literature in Brazil and the history of its translations using studies by Azenha (2015), Lima (2018) and Verdolini (2012). For this work, we analysed the selected data based on the characters that make up the plot, using Berman's Systematic Deformation of the Letter (Berman, 2013 [1985]), choosing the qualitative method, which, according to Mason (2006), focuses on the process and description of the data and its main objective is to interpret the phenomenon being observed. As a result, we can notice that the translator has built a new network of meaning by changing the characterisation of the characters, a fact that can be explained by the patronage relationships established by the publisher for the distribution of the translation.
