Abstract: Heart rate variability (HRV) indices have been described as biomarkers of autonomic nervous system regulation, evidencing the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic activity. The present study aimed to analyze the relationship between HRV and reaction time (RT) in healthy young adults. This is a cross-sectional, observational study that used the Elite HRV app to record HRV during the measurement of cortical metrics via vibrotactile stimuli, using the Brain Gauge device. For statistical analysis, Spearman's correlation tests were performed considering a significance level of 0.05. The sample consisted of 58 healthy young adults (33 women), aged between 18 and 38 years (mean of 26.28±4.72 years). The results revealed an inverse relationship between the RT and the indices of HRV, LF and the LF/HF ratio (rho= -0.456, -0.353 and -0.479, respectively). In addition, the HF index showed a direct relationship (rho=0.354) with the RT. It is concluded that there is an intrinsic integration between autonomic regulation and somatosensory processing, evidencing HRV as a valuable non-invasive tool for physical therapy clinical practice.
