O papel dos incisivos superiores permanentes na análise da dentição mista: um estudo da predição de caninos e pré-molares superiores

Abstract

Introduction: During the mixed dentition phase, changes in the teeth and alveolar bone are crucial for the patient's occlusion and aesthetics. At this stage, canines and premolars are still intraosseous, making it difficult to assess the tooth-bone discrepancy. Objectives: To verify the existence of a statistical correlation that allows the prediction of the mesiodistal dimensions of permanent canines and upper premolars from the mesiodistal dimensions of permanent upper incisors, and to verify the influence of gender on these predictions. Methodology: the Research Ethics Committee (CEP) of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) submitted the study for evaluation and approval. Plaster models of 200 individuals (102 men and 98 women) were selected from the archives of the Orthodontics Specialization Program at UFJF. The crowns of the central and lateral incisors, canines, first and second premolars were measured at their greatest mesiodistal dimension using a digital caliper. After the measurements, the data were analyzed using the statistical software R (R Core Team, 2022), and a linear regression analysis was performed to determine the relationship between the response variable (size of permanent canines and upper premolars) and the predictor variable (size of permanent upper incisors). Conclusion: The study revealed a correlation between the mesiodistal dimensions of permanent canines and upper premolars and the mesiodistal dimensions of permanent upper incisors. Additionally, it was identified that gender influences this correlation. Based on the analyzed data, specific formulas were developed for each gender: CPP = 18.097 + 0.787 x ISP for females, and CPP = 19.120 + 0.787 x ISP for males.
